Iron Solomon - Rule #4081 (ft. Cassidy)

While the next wave of battle rappers is waiting in line to be on a Smack DVD or the next Youtube sensation, the older wave is trying to cash in on that fame, with mixed results. Two of the most famous from that era, Iron Solomon and Cassidy are synonymous with freestyle supremacy, so it's only right that the two would find their way onto a track together. Ironically, the song is about what you need to do to make it onto the scene in hip-hop, with hilarious results. Solomon and Cass made light of the drama and controversy-laced entries into the music industry with this track. 'Rule #4081' describes all of the dirt you have to have in order to be famous, and we can all point out a few rappers who've used that formula to get on top. Whether it's getting shot, a sextape or what have you, can we get back to liking rappers because they can rap, not because of the stories behind them? I know that'll probably fall on deaf ears, but hearing a song like this has to resonate for some of the rappers who follow Dear Whoever. Check out Iron Solomon and Cassidy's rulebook for hip-hop supremacy and start plotting your rise to the top...

Freestyle Friday (10/8)

Hey people, Friday on Dear Whoever is synonymous with FREESTYLES, so here we go. This week I've got Iron Solomon in the studio with Tony Touch on Toca Tuesdays going crazy with the punchlines. He had Tony laughing for half of the verse and seemed at home in front of the mic and camera, unlike a lot of battle rappers turnt regular rappers. The second freestyle is by Al-Quaeda Jada and The Ghost, Styles P. The two D-Block constituents tried their hands at Kanye's 'So Appalled' with explosive results. How these two aren't in 'Top (insert number here) in Hip-Hop' conversations is beyond me. Whatever the case, both ciphers are tough. Check them out and keep it locked to Dear Whoever...

Iron Solomon - King

It's always a hard transition for mixtape bullies and freestyle kings to make into the mainstream. One of the knocks against them is that while they can body a verse, writing a song, complete with relevant lyrics and a good hook, comes hard for some of them (coughcoughJoecoughBuddencoughcough). Maybe it's best that some of them stay in that lane (coughcoughMurdacoughMookcoughcough), but others, like Iron Solomon seem to be able to ride the wave effortlessly. Last week, I threw up Solomon's ode to the spring time. This week, we've got two #dopetracks. One is a remake of the Run DMC classic 'Sucker MC's', featuring DMC himself. You know you've got a cosign when the artist of the song you're remaking gets on the track. The beat switches it up from the original, but stays just familiar enough to make me bop my head extra hard. The second track is Solomon going solo, talking about why he should be considered king. The beat had to grow on me, but after that, his lyrics had me hitting rewind after the first bar. Whatever your stance on mixtape/cypher bullies turned mainstream artists, you've got to admit the man is nice on wax. Check the two loosies out...

Iron Solomon - Spring Fever

If you don't know who Iron Solomon is, then I can gather that you've never watched some of the best freestyles on Youtube. The Brooklyn MC is best known for making mincemeat out of other rappers in freestyle battles. He's finally trying his hand at conquering the rest of hip-hop, and in doing so tackles my favorite time of the year: spring. Solomon talks about skipping work, beautiful, scantily-clad women, and the beautiful weather that comes with spring. His voice on this is a little nutty, but the beat and his lyrics make up for it perfectly. Who would have thought that Iron Solomon would be on the 'Ridin With My Top Down & My Jewwrry On' playlist? Not I. Whatever the case, check out Iron Solomon's foray into the mainstream (or blogosphere; guess they're synonymous now)...

P.S.: Check back in a few weeks for his take on the Run DMC classic 'Sucka MC's'
