Freestyle Friday (8/20)

What's up people? Friday equals freestyles. I'm not going to bore you with a bunch of chat today, because you guys already know the deal. Today we've got a newcomer posted up. Mac Miller is an 18 year old Rostrum Records signee, and travelled to Tony Touch's studio for his famous Toca Tuesdays freestyle series on Sirius Radio. Mac just released his mixtape K.I.D.S. (Kickin Incredibly Dope Sh*t), which I overlooked after hearing two tracks. This freestyle says different. He might very well get another listen now, because he shut down Toca Tuesday. The second cypher is from Joell Ortiz on Funk Flex's spot on Hot 97. I knew this was going to be a problem when Flex mentioned Five Guys Burgers, and Joell didn't disappoint, going 5 minutes straight about the state of the industry. If anyone from Slaughterhouse blows up, it needs to be Joell. He's been the most consistent and best member of the collective for the past year. It's only right he get some shine. With cyphers like this, he needs to be on your radar. The third one is by an oldie but goodie: Charles Hamilton. Chuck hasn't been well recently (mad rumors of his mental health declining and drug problems), but that didn't stop the Harlemite from dropping 27 (yes, 27!) minutes of off-the-top wizardry. You can't deny this man's aptitude for rapping. If he isn't considered one of the best youngsters in the game, I don't know who is. For all of the bad times surrounding Charles, he can go bar for bar with the best of them. I wish Charles all the best, because such a talented soul should be in his best faculties. Check out all three cyphers and keep it locked to Dear Whoever...

Freestyle Friday (7/30)

Hey people, it's Friday and that means nothing other than freestyles. Today, I'm posting up a guy who I've seen floating around the blogosphere but never got a chance to listen either through my own disinterest or just because there are too many rappers out there. Either way, Rain, hailing from North Carolina, is nice with it. He visited Tony Touch's radio show this week and dropped off a long freestyle about where he's from and where he wants to go in this industry. The beat he goes over is really good too. Anyone got the title for me? The second freestyle is by Joell Ortiz, whose YAOWA movement is gaining steam by the day. This freestyle, over DJ Premier's 'Sing Like Bilal', is somewhat of a subliminal diss track, coming at all of the 'new' rappers on the scene now. Not that I agree completely with Joell's stance, but you've got to admit, the man does spit some truth about the way labels act towards them. Not to mention, Joell is actually a monster and could go toe to toe with most of the cats coming out now. Whether YAOWA will put the bullseye on some backs has yet to be seen, but with verses like this, it's looking like the summer's going to end on a high note for Joell. Check out both freestyles and keep it locked to Dear Whoever...

Joell Ortiz - YAOWA (Mixtape Trailer)

'You're Actually One World Away' from me... YAOWA... That's what Joell Ortiz decided to call his next mixtape, a collaboration with DJ Green Lantern and Don Cannon. Ridiculous acronyms aside, I'm actually pretty hyped for this one. Joell's has been the most consistent out of the Slaughterhouse crew (Budden, Royce & Crook need to come out with some hot shit) and with that 'Nissan, Honda, Chevy' cut, has the ears of hip-hop. Along with the new mixtape, he put out a song about MY WIFE, Sanaa Lathan. I couldn't help but listen to what another dude has to say about my queen. Check out the loosie track and the trailer for YAOWA...

Freestyle Friday (4/2)

Hey, it's Freestyle Friday!! The weather's beautiful out, so I'm keeping it short. The first cipher is by B.o.B. on the Tim Westwood show. He rocks over Mafia Music and some Wacka Flocka beats, and almost loses his rhyme 4 times in it (guess it's bound to happen). The second one is from Joell Ortiz, where spits a 5 minute long written, and drops jewels bar after bar. He rapped from his Blackberry, but it was so hot, that Green Lantern made him run it back for the fans calling in. Happy Friday people!!

Beemer, Benz or Bentley vs. Nissan, Honda, Chevy

In the days of old, when no one hopped on each other's beats like that, this wouldn't have happened. But, alas, this is the blogosphere, and no instrumental is safe. Lloyd Banks and Juelz Santana finally came out with the visuals for 'Beemer, Benz or Bentley,' but a few days after Joell Ortiz and Jim Jones (Dip Set seems like they're becoming the hip-hop mercenaries) did the same for 'Nissan, Honda, Chevy.' Do I smell some contention? I hope not, because while I'm inclined to give the nod to Banks and Juelz since it was originally their song, Joell & Jimmy's video was a tad bit iller, as is the concept. Not sure who's to blame either: the artists, the labels or idiotic producers who don't lock down their instrumentals. Regardless, both videos do their respective tracks justice. Which one do you guys prefer??

Freestyle Friday (11/13)

Today's my first Freestyle Friday on my new computer, and I'm glad I could listen to both of these freestyles to christen this thing. Cory Gunz and Joell Ortiz need to be on your radar for next year. Both of these dudes went IN. Cory raps over 'Forever' and 'On to the Next One' and Joell raps over 'Brooklyn's Finest' (he should be up there soon). Do yourself a favor if you like lyrics...

Joell Ortiz can BALL?!?!

Okay, remember the video above??? Yeah, I sure as hell do. Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz participated in a now infamous race, where Joell tried to get at least 50 headstarts in a losing effort to Budden. What's funny is how certain Joell was of his victory and his 'athletic ability'. I guess we have some semblance of proof today with the video below. Joell shows us that size really doesn't matter (well at least when it comes to passing a basketball) and puts on a decent show in the cage...
