Attaway, Bobby Ray!! Point 'em out!!!

B.o.B. - No Future

BEEF is such a watered down version of what it used to be. Gone are the days when rappers would get at each other on their own tracks, like Canibus on LL's '4,3,2,1'. No longer are funny looking caricatures and long monologues using names utilized like 50 Cent in his all-front assault on Ja Rule in 2003. Rappers nowadays may devote passing lines to rivals and keep it moving. Such is the case today Bobby Ray. I woke up this morning to a new track from you entitled 'No Future', and gave it a cursory listen, as I do most music that enters my periphery. Immediately, I heard a B.o.B. that I hadn't heard in years. You sounded angry. You sounded vicious. You sounded like someone had insulted your mother, or better yet you. Then I remembered the OFWGKTA frontman Tyler's track 'Yonkers' where he famously said:
I'll crash that f*cking Airplane that f*ggot nigga B.o.B. was in
Ahhhh! Now the 'No Future' title makes sense. But then I thought more about it and realized that your retort, while lyrically dope, was reminiscent of why rap beef today is so lame. There were no names, there were no personal attacks... Just vague indicators of the nameless foe you were attacking... whom everyone already knew. That said Bobby (and any other rapper that wants to clap back), make sure you make your diss tracks clear. Seriously... It's like handing in an exam without a name on it. You might have aced it, but no one's going to know who it is for. The teacher could use elimination to decipher who it is, but the thought that a kid so smart could forget to write his name almost erases the good grade, in terms of common sense.

I'll say it again, Bobby. The track was kind of hot. You dropped that sing-songy 'I'm trying to be Eminem and talk about obstacles I've overcome' flow, and RAPPED. Too bad it was undirected and vague. If we were keeping score, Tyler would be up 10 with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, and I'm the furthest from an Odd Future fan. I just respect when a rapper has the cojones to put a name out there and stand by it. Hell, I'd rather you not even throw out a diss track if you were going to keep the adversary anonymous. Take a hint, Bobby. The next time someone disses you (and Tyler has since backed away from his comments), take one of two routes: Either A) Pull a 50 and call your rival out like a man, or B) Pull a Jay-Z and don't even regale the comment. Hip-hop was never about sitting on fences. Either you hop over and give your neighbor a piece of your mind, or stay on your side, lament about how his grass is greener and look up at the Airplanes...

All-City Chess Club - I'm Beaming (Remix)

In April, Lupe Fiasco tweeted about a remix to his single 'I'm Beaming' featuring a group he called the All-City Chess Club. The accompanying blog post I put up talked about a lack of group cuts in hip-hop. Lupe's collective, featuring Asher Roth (PIFF), Charles Hamilton (cool, but weird), Diggy (killed it), The Cool Kids (mehhh), B.o.B. (decent), Blu (NICE) and Dosage (1st time hearing him; somewhat impressed), delivers on that call with a bunch of verses over the original beat. I think the best part about the song is the fact that no one recycles flows or tries to mimic the other on wax. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but for a fan of all of the rappers on this track, it's a welcome surprise. No word yet (maybe ever) on whether there'll be another cut by the All-City Chess Club, but at least we know Lupe's not shelved anymore. Check the track out...

B.o.B. - Past My Shades (ft. Lupe Fiasco)

B.o.B. - Airplanes (Pt. 1) (ft. Hayley Williams)

B.o.B. - Airplanes (Pt. 2) (ft. Eminem & Hayley Williams)

I've never been quick to eat my words, but in all honesty, I can't hold back anymore. Bobby Ray is about to blow. Point. Blank. Period. Two top 10 iTunes downloads don't lie. Neither does the crossover potential of a track like Airplanes (Pt. 2). And neither do insane collabs with Lupe Fiasco and Eminem. The thing that impresses me about B.o.B. right now is that he's mastered his flow and is rapping like himself. We can't even compare him to 3 Stacks right now because he's already distinguished himself and found a lane. No, I'm not heralding the rebirth of hip-hop, but it's a bright sign to see an artist garner so much press right now, and have so much anticipation with him. Better yet, it's a bright sign to see more than one artist like that, with Drake and J. Cole gaining steam too. I don't like quoting myself, but this tweet couldn't be truer these days:

It's funny how with one piece of news, hip-hop can look like it's reviving itself. Not that a hypothetical collab bringing the likes as (long breath) J. Cole, Asher Roth, The Cool Kids, B.o.B. Wale, Diggy, Charles Hamilton, Blue, and yourself, Lupe, would merit that kind of happiness. It's just that the last time I've seen a musical work in progress with so many dope names on it was.. never. Aside from Ski Beatz' tape (which still hasn't come out) and Young Money, no one's putting out good mixtapes or albums with a gang of MC's. It's all about the solo act, and pretty mediocres one at that. I remember when putting out a compilation meant everybody brought their A-game and not just their wallets. Then again, no one can really complain about that with you, or most of the artists slated to appear in the work, tentatively entitled "All City Chess Club." If there was ever a time for group and posse cuts a la 'Triumph,' 'Flava in Ya Ear,' '4,3,2,1', and 'Banned From TV,' it's definitely now. Hopefully your collective and Ski Beatz' situations work out. One thing though: What happened to Child Rebel Soldiers?? All this talk about collaborations and we're missing an epic one. Get to work on that after LASERS...

Freestyle Friday (4/2)

Hey, it's Freestyle Friday!! The weather's beautiful out, so I'm keeping it short. The first cipher is by B.o.B. on the Tim Westwood show. He rocks over Mafia Music and some Wacka Flocka beats, and almost loses his rhyme 4 times in it (guess it's bound to happen). The second one is from Joell Ortiz, where spits a 5 minute long written, and drops jewels bar after bar. He rapped from his Blackberry, but it was so hot, that Green Lantern made him run it back for the fans calling in. Happy Friday people!!

Charles Hamilton x B.o.B. - Paperboy

Charles Hamilton & B.O.B. - Paperboy

Chuck seems to be getting back in a groove, especially after putting out his 'last' mixtape, that was generally received with yawns. He and B.O.B. have been recording in Atlanta for the past week or so, and this is what they came up. I have to say that the beat is fire, first of all. Second of all, both Sonic and Bobby Ray seem to mirror each other well on wax, with their sounds meshing really well. I suppose it doesn't hurt that both of them are considered two of the more eccentric MC's from last year's Freshman 10. Hell, sometimes they even sound alike. Whatever the case, I'm hoping the two decide on the pairing being more than a one-track stand. Then again, we never know what to expect with these two guys. Check out their ode to rolling implements, money and non-sequitur laced rhymes...

B.o.B. - May 25h (Mixtape)

I love when rappers make their intentions and aspirations known on wax. I love it more when they name a work in reference to an upcoming work ala 'Road to 'Till the Casket Drops''. B.o.B. must have been listening to my prayers, because his new mixtape is entitled 'May 25th' in reference to 'The Adventures of Bobby Ray,' which he's releasing on that day. I've always been iffy on Bobby Ray because he always rubbed off on me as trying hard to replicate a sound (coughcoughAndre3000coughcough) rather than crafting his own. Today, I eat those words, as I listen to the tape. B.o.B. has a sound now, and he's unafraid to use it. May 25th drops some of the sing-songy tracks that you're used to and replaces it with a little more lyricism and a LOT more in terms of sounds bombarding your ears. If you've never listened to Bobby Ray, this might be the perfect introduction because of how clean it is, and how much he's improved musically. No this isn't vintage Wu-Tang or the new Andre 3000. It's B.o.B. Dude has me ready for May 25th, and it's only the 1st of February. Check the d/l link, covers and tracklist, #dopetracks, loosies and videos...
